The American Concrete Paving Association has presented its Excellence in Concrete Pavements Awards and selected Michael I. Darter for its 2017 Hartmann-Hirschman-Egan Award.

HHE Award

Darter is principal engineer with Applied Research Associates and professor emeritus of the University of Illinois and has spent more than 40 years consulting, researching and teaching in the concrete paving field.

He was chosen for “his innovation, leadership, teaching and mentoring in the field of civil engineering, as well as for his advancement of technology that has resulted in countless numbers of high-quality concrete pavements.”

He was the principal developer of the “AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide,” which ACPA President and CEO Gerald Voigt called “the most comprehensive tool for concrete pavements in history.”

He has also inspired future engineers through his teaching style and his contributions have resulted in improved pavement longevity and quality, Voigt says.
