Liebherr USA, headquartered in in Newport News, Virginia, announces a $45 million expansion on 28 acres there, including three new buildings.Liebherr-International AG – one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction machinery and earthmoving equipment – is investing $45 million in the expansion of its Newport News, Virginia, facility.
Liebherr, a family owned company that’s been manufacturing in Newport News for over 48 years, says it will construct three new buildings on 28 acres next to its current manufacturing facility.
Once completed, the new facilities will total over 251,000 square feet and will serve as Liebherr USA’s new headquarters and administrative building, a production and workshop facility and a warehouse and distribution building.
Construction is expected to begin in July 2018 and be completed by Summer 2020.
Liebherr USA headquarters expects to finish the expansion of its existing headquarters and other facilities by the summer of 2020.“Since 1970, our continued success and commitment to customers in the United States has always been at the forefront of everything we have done and continue to do,” says Torben Reher, managing director of Liebherr USA.

Liebherr USA provides sales and service on behalf of eight different Liebherr product units: Construction Equipment; Mining; Mobile and Crawler Cranes; Tower Cranes; Concrete Technology; Foundation Equipment; Maritime Cranes; Components and the Appliances, which includes refrigerators and freezers.
McKinley Price, mayor of Newport News, is voicing excitement over Liebherr’s choice to again expand and grow its Newport News facility.
“Employing over 400 people, Liebherr is an important industrial employer and has been a committed corporate citizen during its 48-year tenure in Newport News,” the mayor says.
“The city and the Economic Development Authority are proud to be partners in Liebherr’s continued growth in Newport News,” says Florence G. Kingston, director of Newport News Department of Development.
He adds that Liebherr’s expansion “is especially important as we work to diversify the local economy and grow the advanced manufacturing industry in our citys.”
The Liebherr Group has expanded throughout the U.S. since it opened in 1970. It operates 13 locations creating a wide range of jobs with roles in manufacturing as well as sales and service across all of the divisions, the company says.
The Liebherr Group, based in Switzerland employs more than 42,000 people in more than 130 companies worldwide.
