Governors ask Commerce Department to lift cement tariff

Governors of four Southwestern states wrote a joint letter Aug. 10 to the U.S. Commerce Department secretary asking him to lift the 15-year-old tariff on Mexican cement.

Governors Bill Richardson of New Mexico, Mike Rounds of South Dakota, Kenny Guinn of Nevada and Jon Huntsman Jr. of Utah said they remained hopeful Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez would take into account the nation’s cement shortage before the tariff’s reconsideration period expires in October.
