This Contractor Specializes in Building Homes … for Ducks

Lynn Miller has expanded his company Miller Earthworks in Partridge, Kansas, from a one-man show to a team of 13 employees, and one of their specialties is building duck habitat.

In the video above, Miller, who is one of Equipment World’s 12 finalists for the 2024 Contractor of the Year Awards, shows us one of his waterfowl projects in the works and explains how the company has caught the attention of such project owners as Ducks Unlimited. Miller is a big proponent of 3D machine control for his excavators and 2D grade control for dozers and scrapers, especially when meeting the wetland projects’ exact specifications.

Over the years, the company has also gained expertise in pipeline work, municipal clearing and utility jobs, and agricultural-related projects.

Miller discusses how the company has developed long-term client relationships – in some cases working with second and third generations of the same companies. He also expects his employees to help foster those relationships, and to do so, he gives each one a company credit card for taking clients to lunch.

Employee relations is also important to Miller, making a point to ensure they know they are valued.
