Liebherr Unveils 3 New Generation 8 Excavators: R 915, R 917 and R 920

Liebherr has updated its 15- to 20-metric-ton excavator lineup with three new Generation 8 models:

• The 122-horsepower R 915 replaces the R 914.
• The 136-horsepower R 917 is a completely new model, featuring a compact swing radius of 5 feet 11 inches for tight urban and residential jobsites and pipeline and lifting work.
• The 150-horsepower R 920 maintains the same nomenclature as its Generation 7 predecessor.

All three models feature a reduced tail swing, strong digging forces, optimized engine and hydraulic systems, and a new cab for comfort and performance on earthmoving, road construction and utility installation. 

Improved kinematics reduces the need to reposition the excavator for increased productivity, while a balanced machine design enables the use of a wide range of attachments and hydraulic tools.

Liebherr says its new "emCAB" provides a “modern, ergonomic working environment” for operators with a focus on efficiency.

The cornerstone of the cab is the INTUSI (Intuitive User Interface), which offers:

• A customizable 10-inch color touchscreen for access to key functions
• Two electric-over-hydraulic joysticks ergonomically positioned on either side of the operator’s seat for smooth, precise control
• A simplified control unit on the righthand console to reduce fatigue

Additional technology includes:

• Bucket Fill Assist (BFA): Automatic bucket-filling cycle for increased productivity, as standard with 500 machine hours included.
• Modetronic: Customizable driving modes based on the task.
• Cameras: Located on the right side and rear of the excavator for increased safety.

The cabs also come equipped with a high-visibility orange seat belt, air conditioning and an Airsprung seat with vertical and horizontal suspension.

Easier Maintenance and Connected Support

Parts and components have been designed for long-term durability in demanding work environments. Liebherr says it also focused on ease of maintenance with ground-level access to key service points.

The Generation 8 machines feature an open architecture allowing for future assistance systems and digital upgrades, the company says.

Excavators are the third-highest selling product category of construction equipment in the U.S., behind compact track loaders and mini excavators, according to Fusable's EDA data. Approximately 15,000 new financed excavators were sold from May 2025 to April 2026. (Fusable is also the parent company of Equipment World.)
