The timelapse video below shows a Route 8 bridge being replaced as part of the Connecticut Department of Transportation‘s (CTDOT) Bridge Program, which prioritizes rehabilitation and replacement work based on a continuous assessment of the remaining useful life of bridges.

Accelerated Bridge Construction techniques were used to reduce bridge closure time. Prefabricated modular steel beam units were built off site and installed during a short road closure. The plan reduced lane closure and stage construction periods from two years to two 14-day periods.

The new structure has modern weathering steel beams that require no paint or maintenance during its expected 75 year lifespan.
