While working on a jobsite in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brighton Beach in New York City, a construction worker was killed after a 60-foot fall.
According to reports from the New York Post and NBC New York, the man was doing concrete work on the sixth floor of a building under construction when he fell from a scaffold. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The reports conflict on the man’s age. The Post reports he was in his 60s while NBC and other outlets reported he was in his 50s. NBC reports he was later identified as Vidal Sanchez-Roman.
The cause of his fall is unknown but under investigation by the city’s Department of Buildings and Office of Emergency Management.
Falls are the number one cause of death in the construction industry. OSHA is encouraging contractors and construction firms to participate in the upcoming fall prevention safety stand-down May 4-15.
