Finished steel imports up 13 percent in March
Based on the Commerce Department’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported on April 4 that steel import permit applications for the month of March totaled 3,144,000 net tons (NT). This was a 22-percent increase from the 2,580,000 permit tons recorded in February and a 17 percent increase from the February preliminary imports total of 2,689,000 NT. Import permit tonnage for finished steel in March was 2,275,000 NT, up 11 percent from the preliminary imports total of 2,051,000 NT in February.

Preliminary steel imports down 10 percent
Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 2,107,000 net tons (NT) of steel in November (down 10%), including 1,646,000 NT of finished steel (down 13%) vs. the October final data. Annualized total and finished steel imports in 2011 would be 28.8 and 22.1 million NT, respectively, up 21% and 17% vs. 2010. Finished steel import market share in November was an estimated 20% and is 22% year-to-date (YTD).
