Despite having received $297-million in Troubled Asset Relief Program money, this bank in Santa Maria, California, is refusing to lend money to a large commercial project already underway and to contractors it had lent to before. The purpose of the TARP was to help banks start making loans again.

Local OSHA offices place emphasis on stimulus projects
Local OSHA offices in St. Louis, Missouri, and Wichita, Kansas, have launched programs specifically aimed at stimulus-funded construction projects. The effort will include outreach and enforcement activities. Since stimulus projects are likely to include more than one contractor, inspections will be targeted to specific jobsites rather than specific employers.

Diversity program nets 1,400 new construction workers
A two-year program aimed at recruiting and training minorities for construction jobs in Los Angeles has resulted in the placement of some 1,400 workers. The program used the city’s construction unions and a book camp style training program to fill apprentice slots in the construction industry.
