Put on your battle gear–2,000th stimulus transportation project underway
Looks like things are moving along with the stimulus package and highway construction. But get ready for battle.        President Barack Obama today announced funding for the 2,000th transportation project under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  But securing funding for these projects is apparently intense competition. Think The Ohio State University vs. University […]

LaHood: Letting states opt out of highway program ‘not best way forward’
Regardless mof whether the funding formula used to distribute federal highway money to states is unfair, I’m still not convinced that letting states opt out of participating in the federal highway program is a better solution…or one that even makes sense. (Disclaimer here: This is my own opinion, not that of Better Roads or any of the […]

LaHood: $742.5 Million in Federal Recovery Act Funds to Pay for Transit Projects in Nine States
Looks like rail is on track to get more money. When the stimulus bill passed with $8 billion allocated for high-speed rail–a big winner considering the House hadn’t included any money for it in the stimulus package and the Senate had only set aside $2 billion — it was clear that it was the surprise winner. We’ve been talking about it and writing about […]

Another look at replacing the gas tax
As we struggle to figure out how to fund the next surface transportation bill, the topic of raising the gas tax continues to emerge. It’s not a popular idea amongst the motoring public — no one likes increased taxes, including myself — but it’s one of the most viable ways to fund transportation. The federally […]

Highway bill reauthorization delay has slowed projects, perpetuating bad road conditions in U.S.
Looks like we’re already seeing the effects of Congress’ failure to pass legislation reauthorizing SAFETEA-LU. States are reticient to put out jobs for bid because they don’t know when or whether they’ll have the funding. Oklahoma is one such state. On Monday, State Transportation Department Director Gary Ridley told the state’s Transportation Commission that fewer […]

Revamped Recovery.gov site unveiled, but not garnering much praise
A supposedly new and improved version of Recovery.gov –the official Web site for tracking stimulus money–has been unveiled by the independent agency responsible for stimulus oversight, according to an online ProPublica report. However, although the site now has more maps and data, it’s still not being lauded as a great site and resource.
