Worker killed when rebar falls 130 feet, strikes him in the head

A large piece of rebar fell from a crane on a Lincoln, Nebraska jobsite, killing a construction worker on the ground below.

According to a report from the Lincoln Journal Star, 41-year-old Michael Snider was killed June 24 when the “rebar fell 130 feet and hit him on top of the head.”

“His hard hat is in pieces,” Lincoln Police Sgt. Ed Sheridan told the paper.

Crews for Missouri-based CBS Pilings Solutions Inc. were working on the construction of a new student housing project, drilling holes for the building’s foundation.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the metal fell from a crane around 11:20 a.m.. Another report from NBC Nebraska says the accident involved “some sort of mechanical failure.”

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
