Virginia’s 6-year transportation program provides $9.9 billion for highway projects

The Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) has approved the most recent Six-Year Improvement Program (SYIP) for $13.3 billion in highway, rail and public transportation projects.

The SYIP spans the next six fiscal years (FY) starting July 1 this year.

Of the total, $9.9 billion will go toward highway construction projects, with the remaining $3.4 billion dedicated to rail and transit work.

This year’s program does not include any projects under the recently approved scoring process, which is set to start in July 2016.

The FY 2016 annual budget is set at roughly $5.29 billion, with $1.96 billion dedicated to highway construction, and $2.01 billion for highway maintenance and operations.

The total budget is 21 percent more than FY 2015, due to planned bonds, local and regional funding and revenue provided by a higher gas tax that started in January.
