Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling thousands of Ram 1500 pickups due to a manufacturing oversight with the trucks’ rear axles.
An estimated 65,760 Ram trucks in the U.S. are affected by the recall which is being carried out voluntarily by the automaker in order to inspect and replace rear axles and rear axle shafts that were not properly heat-treated during manufacturing.
FCA says the oversight may “contribute to increased wear and overheating sufficient to illuminate a vehicles Anti-lock Brake System warning light.” If the issue goes ignored in an affected truck, FCA says the axle could fracture and possibly cause a wheel to separate from the truck.
FCA says it is aware of at least one incident that may have been caused by the defect but there have been no injuries.
The recall is limited to certain 2015-2016 Ram trucks manufactured between mid-June and September of this year. The company adds that the majority of the recalled trucks are still on dealer lots.
FCA will notify affected owners in order to schedule a free inspection and servicing of their trucks. The automaker urges any customers who observe an ABS warning light or any other item of concern to contact their dealers immediately.
