7 state projects honored in northeastern America’s Transportation Awards

00_INFR_ATAlogo_659x439pxSeven northeastern state transportation projects have earned honors in America’s Transportation Awards, the sponsors announced Tuesday.

The competition — hosted by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — recognizes the top transportation projects in the U.S. each year. It is now in its seventh year.

Projects were judged in three categories: projects that finish under budget, projects that feature exceptional uses of innovation and projects that improve quality of life and development of communities.

Fifteen state projects from seven northeastern states and the District of Columbia were nominated this year.

The following projects in those states and in Washington, D.C. won awards:

  • Naples Bay Bridge and Causeway Project: Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) – Quality of Life/Community Development category, small
  • Memorial Bridge Project: New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) – Quality of Life/Community Development category, medium
  • 11th Street Bridge Replacement Project–Phase I: District Department of Transportation (DDOT) – Quality of Life/Community Development category, large
  • Bay Street Bridge, Morey’s Dam and Fish Passage: Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) – Under Budget category, small
  • Pawtucket Bridge Replacement Project: Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) – Under Budget category, medium
  • I-84 Bridges over Dingle Road Replacement Project: New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) – Best Use of Innovation category, small
  • New York Avenue Bridge over Rail Tracks Rehabilitation Project: DDOT – Best Use of Innovation category, medium

The winners in the three remaining regions will be announced later this summer.

The 10 projects with the highest overall scores will compete for the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award. A panel of transportation experts will choose the Grand Prize winner, while the People’s Choice Award will go to the transportation project that receives the most online votes from the public.

Online voting begins September 4. Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award winners will be announced at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Charlotte, N.C., in November.
