The barricades guided nearly 50,000 spectators that turned out to watch the last major professional golfing event of the season to a 140-foot-long temporary pedestrian bridge built in preparation for the 93rd PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek.
In addition to more than 100 full-size motor coaches and shuttle buses, city and state officials had to contend with an already heavily congested commuter route along the highway.
Transportation officials monitored traffic patterns 18 hours a day from command centers in Atlanta and Johns Creek, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. Fans were also encouraged to take advantage of event shuttle buses that departed from the Gwinnett Center in Duluth instead of driving to ease congestion as parking accommodations near the event were reserved for event personnel and media crews.
