Worker killed in second-story fall from California casino jobsite

A worker was killed Wednesday afternoon after falling two stories at a casino construction site in Santa Ynez, California.

According to a report from the Lompoc Record, 45-year-old steelworker Dave Goldsberry fell from scaffolding on the second story of a tower under construction at the Chumash Casino Resort.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Goldsberry was employed by SME Steel Contractors, a subcontractor for Tutor Perini Building Corporation. Shortly after the fall, the company continued work at the site where crews are building a 12-story tower for the casino.

The company and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are conducting investigations into the incident.

Falls are the number one cause of death in the construction industry. OSHA is encouraging contractors and construction firms to participate in the upcoming fall prevention safety stand-down May 4-15.
