Longtime carpenter, cancer survivor, dies after fall into Connecticut harbor

A worker on a dock project in Connecticut died hours after a mysterious fall into New Haven Harbor last week.

According to a report from the New Haven Register, 60-year-old William Klemenz died Tuesday night after suffering a fall into the harbor Tuesday morning.

The paper reports Klemenz was assisting a welder on a new dock for the harbor’s Magellan Terminal. Klemenz was handing the welder metal rods when he suddenly disappeared and was later found face down in the water.

His co-workers quickly pulled him from the water and gave him CPR, but he passed later than night at the hospital.

A member of the carpenters union for 36 years, the paper reports Klemenz had returned to dock work after recovering from treatment for brain cancer a year and a half ago. His fall might have been the result of a medical emergency resulting from that recovery.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.
