During a recent visit to Appleton, Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker announced that, as a result of savings that allowed work to progress faster than anticipated, the WIS 441 Tri-County Project will be completed in 2019, a full year ahead of schedule, the Post-Crescent reports.

The project includes rebuilding and widening a 6-mile stretch of U.S. 10 and WIS 441 between Winnebago County and Appleton from four to six lanes, and building a second bridge next to the one over Little Lake Butte des Morts.

“We made a firm commitment to investing in infrastructure,” Gov. Walker said, according to the new agency. “But it’s not just putting more money in, it’s making sure those dollars are spent more effectively.”

Cost of the project, which began in 2014, was estimated at $482 million, but a Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) report released during the summer of 2017 changed the estimated cost to $400 million.

The interchange between Interstate 41 and U.S. 10 and the diverging diamond interchange planned for the WIS 441 and Oneida Street intersection are scheduled to open in 2018.
