Volvo Construction Equipment is expanding its Co-Pilot intelligent compaction interface with a new real-time guidance feature for soil compaction. Volvo product manager Bill Laing says the new Compact Assist for Soil is a “game-changer for soil compaction.”

“It takes all the guesswork out of soil compaction, allowing operators at any experience level to save time and money, and get the job done right the first time,” Laing says.

Compact Assist for Soil displays the number of passes and Compaction Meter Value (CMV) showing operators the exact number of passes across the entire work area, as well as whether those areas have reached sufficient compaction. The interface displays each compactor pass and drum overlap with a unique color. The operator can also toggle to the CMV screen to see which areas have achieved sufficient compaction and which areas may need another pass. CMV estimates the relative comparison of material stiffness, and the drum bounce detection feature alerts the operator when there is over-compacted material, Volvo says.

This is the latest application Volvo is offering through its Co-Pilot onboard display for Intelligent Compaction, a 10-inch tablet like device available on new Volvo compactors. Compact Assist for Asphalt with Density Direct real-time density mapping is also available.

The Co-Pilot display’s 14GB hard drive can hold seven months of data gathered from density mapping, surface temperatures and pass mapping. The data can also be backed up to a USB drive.

The company says an optional Differential GPS links data gathered to location information that is accurate within a half-inch.

The packages are available on new Volvo asphalt compactors DD105, DD110B, DD120C and DD140C, and will be available aftermarket for Volvo compactors in the future.
