On May 26 New York City’s new World Trade Center transportation hub—known as the Oculus—celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The $4 billion structure is comprised of 160-foot walls that rise like “immense clamshells toward a ribbon of glass that is the giant hall’s skylight,” according to a report from the New York Times. The distinctive structure is connected to the city’s subway system but it’s main purpose is to serve as a PATH train station for 50,000 commuters traveling between the city and New Jersey.

The time-lapse from EarthCam below chronicles construction on the hub between July 2011 and May 2016.
