Greg and Dawn Tatro, owners of G. W. Tatro Construction, were named Equipment World’s 2016 Contractor of the Year at ceremonies in Las Vegas this weekend.

The Tatros, who perform both civil and mountain ski infrastructure work out of Jeffersonville, Vermont, received some of the highest client recommendations that Equipment World editors had heard in 16 years of hosting the Contractor of the Year program.

“They’re phenomenal,” says Gregory Hiltz, Killington Mountain Resort in Killington, Vermont. “They do fantastic work. In fact, I’m awestruck about how great they are to deal with. They’re caring, considerate, cost effective and on time.”

Adds Brendan Ryan with Peak Resorts, West Dover, Vermont: “Anytime Tatro comes onto a job, they go above and beyond my expectations. They are a can-do company. They will find a way.”

The Tatros took over the family firm in 2004, after the passing of Greg’s father, Gerald Tatro, who established the firm in 1956. The company, which has $13 million in annual revenues, builds roads, ski areas, wastewater facilities, resorts, municipal and snowmaking systems, along with other infrastructure projects. It currently employs about 50 people.

Since its inception in 2000, the Contractor of the Year program has been sponsored by Caterpillar. Each year, the editors of Equipment World select 12 finalists from submitted applications; all company finalists receive a weekend at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas.

The Contractor of the Year program includes a Friday night roundtable, Saturday morning focus group and an awards banquet. All finalists then become Caterpillar’s VIP guests while attending the NASCAR race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
