USDOT to host free public workshops on connected vehicle integration with ITS architecture

Vehicle To Vehicle CommunicationThe U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) is planning to host two public workshops to discuss the integration of details of connected vehicle capabilities into the National Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture.

The workshops will cover National ITS Architecture, version 7.1 integration with the Connected Vehicle Reference Implementation Architecture into ARC-IT Version 8.0.

“ARC-IT provides a unifying framework that covers ITS comprehensively, including connected vehicle and traditional infrastructure ITS capabilities,” USDOT reports. “ARC-IT and the accompanying toolsets help implementers develop regional architectures to effectively meet their needs and ensure regulatory compliance, while facilitating efficient, secure, and interoperable ITS deployments. Version 8.0 of the ARC-IT and its accompanying software tools are available at no cost from arc-it.net.”

USDOT says the ITS Architecture offers a consistent framework to guide the planning and deployment of ITS and connected vehicle technologies.

“ARC-IT identifies options for interoperable deployment of technologies from an enterprise, physical, logical, and communications perspective,” the department says. “It also facilitates the ability of jurisdictions to operate collaboratively and harness the benefits of a regional approach to transportation challenges.”

Workshop details

During the workshop, the USDOT will seek stakeholder feedback on the content and usability of the next-generation ITS Architecture. This workshop will also:

  • Illustrate how ARC-IT relates to the National ITS Architecture, Version 7.1, and the CVRIA
  • Describe the tools (what they are, what they are used for, and who should use them in planning for deployment)
  • Describe how ARC-IT fits into the deployment process.

Representatives from the ITS Architecture team and the USDOT’s ITS Program will describe the evolution of the Architecture and walk participants through the two companion software tools:

  • Regional Architecture Development for Intelligent Transportation (RAD-IT), which provides all the functionality that regional architects have come to expect from Turbo Architecture. This tool has been updated with a more modern user interface and use of the ARC-IT database.
  • System Engineering Tool for Intelligent Transportation (SET-IT), which provides architects with the ability to tailor and specify their implementations.
