Widening of a busy corridor in Las Vegas will begin in January now that the Nevada Department of Transportation has awarded a $65 million contract.

U.S. 95 will be widened from four lanes to six for 6 miles between Durango Drive and Kyle Canyon Road.

“This project will relieve congestion, improve efficiency and enhance safety in fast growing northwest Las Vegas, while providing capacity for future growth and development,” said NDOT spokesman Tony Illia.

The NDOT reports that 52,000 vehicles a day travel the corridor. Along with widening, the project will involve constructing a diverging diamond interchange at Kyle Canyon Road. Other improvements include decorative rock, new signs and lighting, and 9 miles of barrier rail. The NDOT will also add digital signs that display real-time traffic conditions. Flood control measures will also be constructed.

Construction is scheduled to end in Fall 2019.
