The devastating flooding in Texas has caused upwards of $27 million dollars, and that estimate is on the low side.
According to the Associated Press, Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Veronica Beyer said that the flooding has caused damage to roadways in 167 of the 254 counties in the state.
TxDOT has already spent $3 million in labor and equipment as workers inspected 100 bridges.
As of May 31, the flooding has claimed the lives of at least 22 people in Texas and left 155 of the state’s roads were underwater or closed because of damage. Meteorologists say enough rain fell in May to cover the entire state with 8 inches of water, according to a report from CNN.
President Obama has declared the event a major disaster as it continues to cripple Texas. Officials expect the $27 million dollar estimate to rise in the days and weeks to come.
The flooding has caused deaths and destruction from the Texas Panhandle to the Gulf of Mexico.
The National Weather Service declared the flooding to be on a level that hasn’t been seen for 150-200 years.
