Sen. Barbara Boxer will retire from Congress in 2016

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) has announced plans to retire from Congress following her current term.

“I will not be running for the Senate in 2016,” Boxer announced on her website in a video with her grandson. “I want to come home to this state that I love so much, California.”

Boxer, 74, is seen as a leader on environmental issues and has been a member of Congress for three decades. Her retirement will also leave open the top Democratic spot on the Environment and Public Works Committee.

Boxer hopes Congress secures a long-term transportation plan before her retirement. Just recently she told Congress to focus on the Highway Trust Fund instead of the Keystone XL pipeline.
