The city of Boston is seeing its own spike of residential construction. And to the city’s surprise, a lot of it is happening downtown, The Boston Globe reported. The Globe reports that the downtown area is actually morphing “into a full-blown neighborhood.”
The area, which has struggled for years, will experience updates through some remodels as well as some new construction, due in part to recent interest in the area by restaurants and retailers spurred on by residential growth in the area.
Among the newly-constructed buildings in the area are a $260 million, 625-foot apartment and condominium tower; a 381-unit apartment tower with an outdoor pool, solarium, and yoga lounge; a 15-story, 256-unit luxury condominium known as Millennium Place; and the addition of 100,000 square feet of retail space at the former site of Filene’s in Downtown Crossing.
Renovations include a 240-room boutique known as 59 Temple Place, an office building turned 50-unit apartment building at 8 Winter Street and an office complex at Lafayette City Center converted into retail space.
Additionally, Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s administration has called for road and sidewalk repairs, new lighting, and other upgrades, all funded by local tax dollars.
