Thomas Nierman, owner of Nierman Landscape & Design has depended on Mobil Delvac since he started his company in 1991. He offers full-service, commercial and residential landscape design/build and maintenance and is a 2011 Total Landscaper of the Year finalist for Total Landscape Care magazine. Nierman says he gets great satisfaction from driving past jobs he completed years ago and many of his customers and employees have stayed with him for two decades. “This job never gets boring and every day I look forward to working outside with my customers and crew.”

How did you get started in the business?

I went to college and studied plants and soil science with the plan to become a golf course attendant. After college I worked for a landscape company until one day I quit and decided to start my own business. I bought one small dump truck and then started cold calling by going door-to-door with flyers. Several of my first customers in 1991 are still customers 21 years later. 

How does Mobil Delvac help you succeed in your business?

I’m a big proponent of preventative maintenance and do all of my work in-house. I’ve been doing this for 21 years and still run my first truck. I believe in choosing a quality product that I can depend on to keep my equipment in top shape. Mobil Delvac1300 Super 15W-40 is my product of choice. 

How do you own your success?

I take care of my customers. If they need something, my crew and I are on it. I believe in doing the job right the first time, but I will do what it takes to make sure the customer is satisfied. The majority of problems can be worked out with clear communication. If someone isn’t happy, it’s because we are not communicating. When customers talk to me, I truly listen. I treat every job like it’s my own back yard.
