The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has unveiled a new informational tool that aims to educate the public and elected officials about the potential impact of an insolvent Highway Trust Fund (HTF).

The HTF, which funds the majority of state and local surface transportation projects, is expected to run out of money this summer.

The tool includes an infographic displaying information from agencies such as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), U.S. DOT and more. The tool includes an infographic displaying information from agencies such as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), U.S. DOT and more.

AASHTO’s new tool, “Nation at a Crossroads,” is a collection of informational tools to that provide information about the HTF and how federal funding affections state and local surface transportation investments.

“Surface transportation is a national issue, but it also is a very local issue that affects Americans on a personal level,” Bud Wright, AASHTO executive director, said in a written statement. “This information tool describes the national implications of not supporting the Highway Trust Fund, as well as how transportation will be impacted on a state and local level.”

The tool includes a web-based, interactive infographic; a mobile app; and a printed brochure. The information in the infographic comes from AASHTO members and industry sources such as U.S. Department of Transportation, TRIP, American Public Transportation Association (APTA), and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
