Better Roads has a new addition: Mike Anderson joins the Better Roads crew

Better Roads magazine has a new editor on staff.

Mike Anderson has joined the Better Roads staff as senior editor. He will also serve as senior editor of Better Roads’  sister magazine, Equipment World. Mike is a welcome addition. I’ve personally known Mike for several years now through the Construction Writers Association and from industry press events. He is an excellent editor and very knowledgeable. He’s also a great person.

We hope you’ll be as excited as we are to have him join our staff.

Here are a few words from Mike as well as some background about him.

“To have the opportunity to join the staff of Better Roads and Randall-Reilly Publishing Co. is truly equivalent to winning the lottery twice in the same day,” Anderson says.

“Under the leadership of Publisher Joe Donald and Editor-in-Chief John Latta, Better Roads is positioned ideally to both leverage a tremendously rich history and fully embrace the future as an industry-leading full media ensemble. It is highly invigorating, motivating and gratifying, and yet so very humbling, to be asked to be a part of this team, especially at such an exciting moment,” Anderson continues. “At the same time, to be welcomed as an associate of Randall-Reilly Publishing Co. is an honor reserved for the truly blessed, fortunate, achieving and accomplishing among those of us who love working in the B2B media realm. I deeply appreciate and cherish this opportunity, and only look forward to sunny days to come.”

I am a native of Pembroke, Ontario, Canada, but grew up primarily in the Toronto-area community of Brampton, graduating in 1984 from J.A. Turner Secondary School, where I first fell in love with media studies. My first media gig was, in Grade 11, as a sports reporter for a local radio station. During college, studying Journalism at Humber College in Toronto, I started working as a part-time reporter for my hometown Brampton Daily Times newspaper, and later joined the staff full-time upon graduation.

During the next 10 years, I worked as a reporter and/or editor at newspapers in Guelph, Sudbury, Cambridge and Hanover, Ontario. In 1996, I moved to the trade press, as editor of Equipment Journal (EJ), Canada’s National Heavy Equipment Newspaper, based in Mississauga, Ontario. Over the next 10-plus years with EJ, I jumped head-first into covering the North American construction equipment industry, often traveling throughout the U.S. to attend  new product launches, trade shows and association meetings.

In 2002, I was elected to the Board of Directors of the Chicago-based Construction Writers Association (CWA), serving seven years as a board member, including 2007-08 as president during the association’s 50th anniversary. (I was the first non-U.S. president of CWA, although by then I was working for U.S.-based Construction Equipment.)

In November 2006, I joined the staff of Reed Business Information-owned Construction Equipment as senior editor, working from my home-based office in Ontario, Canada. It was an absolute honor to be asked to join a team I truly idolized – an honor that could only be surpassed by one other: In February, 2010, I joined the team at Randall-Reilly Publishing Co., at headquarters in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Here’s the official press release from Randall-Reilly, parent company of Better Roads magazine.

Randall-Reilly, the premier business media and information company serving the construction and trucking industries, announces the addition of Michael D. Anderson to the company’s Construction Division.

“Mike is well-known and respected throughout the construction equipment industry,” says Marcia Gruver, editorial director, construction division. “We’re excited about the leadership and professionalism he brings to our products.”

As senior editor of Better Roads and Equipment World magazines, Anderson will work on a variety of projects that will make use of his extensive background in the industry, which began in 1996 as editor of Equipment Journal in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Most recently, he served as senior editor of Construction Equipment magazine of Oak Brook, Illinois.

Anderson has received a number of honors throughout his construction journalism career, including three national awards for his work while at Construction Equipment. He also served as president of the Construction Writers Association in 2007-08 and continues to serve on the association’s board of directors.

“We’re looking forward to adding Mike to the stellar staff of our industry-leading construction publications,” says Dan Tidwell, senior vice president/group publisher. “Our readers will be well served by his industry insight, deep relationships and broad knowledge base.”
