Photo from CBS BostonWith 4,000 pieces of equipment for winter weather, 380,000 tons of salt and 750,000 gallons of liquid de-icer, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation is letting the public know its ready for winter.
MassDOT held a press conference on Thursday, according to CBS Boston, in front of a fleet of snow removal equipment and an electric traffic sign that put a Boston slant on a recognizable slogan from the hit HBO show “Game of Thrones” by declaring “Wintahz Coming.”
The department said its fleet includes snow melting equipment that can get rid of 120 tons of snow and ice in just an hour, on top of the countless snow plows keeping roads clear the old fashioned way.
MassDOT Secretary Stephanie Pollack took the time to preemptively thank the MassDOT employees who have to put in overtime and wake up at all hours to go out into the winter storms.
WCVB reported that Pollock also wanted to remind drivers to be prepared themselves for the winter weather by putting emergency equipment like jumper cables and blankets in their vehicles.
“Just like we are getting ready for winter, we want our drivers to, too,” Pollack said. “One of the teachable moments from last year is that Mother Nature may show up late to the party, but when she shows up, she means business.”
Pollock added that drivers should always stay back at least 200 feet from the winter equipment out on the roads and avoid passing plows and other equipment.
