Michigan DOT’s Grand River Crossing along M-231The Mid America Association of Transportation Officials (MAASTO) has recognized the state departments of transportation for Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin for excellence in transportation projects as part of the annual America’s Transportation Awards.
The awards were presented at MAASTO’s annual meeting in Minneapolis. Eight state DOTs entered 17 projects in the contest.
Winning projects include:
Best Use of Innovation
- Wisconsin Department of Transportation – (medium project group) I-794 Hoan Bridge and Lake Freeway reconstruction and repainting project in Milwaukee.
- Missouri Department of Transportation – (small project group) Battlefield and Route 65 Diverging Diamond Interchange project in Springfield.
Under Budget
- Michigan Department of Transportation – (medium project group) Reconstruction and widening project on I-75 from Dixie Highway to Hess Road in Saginaw County.
Quality of Life/Community Development
- Michigan Department of Transportation – (large project group) Construction of a new Grand River crossing along M-231 that improved connectivity, mobility and safety between the communities of Crockery and Robinson in Ottawa County.
- Illinois Department of Transportation – (medium project group) Construction of a second bridge built above railroad tracks in Galesburg to increase travel safety and reduce noise throughout the city took top honors in the medium project group.
- Ohio Department of Transportation – (small project group) A project to connect Cleveland’s lower west side communities to West Shoreway and Edgewater Park by building a railroad bridge and extending West 73rd Street to add a multimodal path.
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the America’s Transportation Awards. Four regional competitions are held and the 10 winners with the highest overall scores are selected as finalists for the National Grand Prize, People’s Choice Award and $10,000 in prizes. Two national winners will be recognized at AASHTO’s annual meeting Sept. 24-28 in Chicago.
