2016 GMC Sierra 3500HD DenaliGMC is now offering a gooseneck/fifth-wheel trailering package on its Sierra HD pickups and a trailering camera system for the entire Sierra lineup.
The gooseneck/fifth-wheel package will run $350 and consists of a frame-mounted hitch platform and tray concealed beneath the truck’s bed floor. The platform accommodates ball hitch or fifth-wheel hitch mounting brackets and when the hitch isn’t needed it can be removed to allow for full use of the bed.
GMC includes caps for the openings in the floor and a bed-mounted seven-way trailer wiring connection with this package.
The truck maker is also offering a gooseneck completion kit at its dealerships for $315 which features a 2-5/16-inch ball hitch and two chain tie-downs. GMC dealers also offer CURT Manufacturing fifth-wheel hitches in 20,000- and 25,000-lb. versions for $939 and $999, respectively (not including tax, installation and labor charges).
The 2016 Sierra HDs’ fifth-wheel trailering ratings have the following max capacities:
- 2500HD trailering rating of 18,000 pounds (8,165 kg)
- 3500HD single-rear-wheel trailering rating of 17,500 pounds (7,938 kg)
- 3500HD dual-rear-wheel trailering rating of 23,200 pounds (10,523 kg)
Trailering camera system
Views from the trailering camera system can be accessed at any time from the in-cab display.GMC developed its new trailering camera system with Echomaster to reduce blind spots while hauling. The $999 system is offered on 2014-16 Sierra 1500 and HD trucks with DPN- or DQS-code trailer mirrors.
Side-view cameras are installed in the truck’s mirrors.Using cameras mounted in the truck’s mirrors and one mounted to the top, rearmost edge of the trailer, the system displays focused views of the sides of the truck and rear of the trailer on the in-cab display.
The rear backup camera is activated whenever the truck is put in reverse but can also be activated by holding the radio’s Home button for five seconds. All of the trailering camera system’s individual views are always accessible via the in-cab display.
A fourth camera, complete with infrared lighting for low-light, is an available option and provides views of the interior of the trailer.
