Ford reveals 3 tailored power levels for 2016 F-650, F-750; claims best-in-class standard power

Though Ford’s decision to drop the Cummins ISB 6.7 liter engine currently offered in its F-650 and F-750 work trucks raised more than a few eyebrows, the automaker announced three power levels this morning for the 2016 models—including a standard package that is best-in-class.

The new trucks will be powered by Ford’s own 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel and will allow customers to tailor the trucks’ power to their needs at three levels:

  • 270 horsepower and 675 lb.-ft. of torque (best-in-class for a standard diesel package)
  • 300 hp and 700 lb.-ft. of torque
  • 330 hp and 725 lb.-ft. of torque

“While other medium-duty truck manufacturers restrict top horsepower and torque ratings to certain applications, such as emergency services, the all-new F-650/F-750 will arrive with no vocational restrictions,” John Ruppert, general manager of  Ford’s Commercial Vehicle Sales and Marketing said in a prepared statement.

“We’re giving our customers the power of choice to determine what’s best for their business.”

Each power level will pair the 6.7-liter Power Stroke with a commercial-grade six-speed Ford TorqShift HD automatic transmission. A 6.8-liter gasoline V10 will also be offered with the trucks and will also be paired with the TorqShift transmission.

The 6.8-liter V10 can be factory-prepped for converting to compressed natural gas or liquid propane gas as cost-effective alternatives to unleaded gasoline.

The 2016 Ford F-650/F-750 will be available in spring 2015 and will be offered in three cab styles – Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab—and three models—straight frame, dock height and an all-new dedicated tractor model for heavy towing.
