2016 CNG/propane F-150After unveiling the alternative fuel package in May, the first 2016 F-150s with the gaseous-fuel prep option have rolled off Ford’s assembly line in Kansas City.

The package makes the F-150 capable of running on compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane. Ford is currently the only automaker offering a CNG/propane half-ton pickup truck.

The initial engine prep cost from the factory is $315 and includes hardened valves, valve seats, pistons and piston rings, enabling the 5-liter V8 to run on gas, CNG and propane through seperate fuel systems.

The conversion itself is handled by Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifiers on a ship-through basis and includes the installation of supply fuel tanks, fuel lines and unique fuel injectors.

The upfits run approximately $7,500 to $9,500 depending on fuel tank capacity, after the initial engine prep cost.

Once outfitted, Ford says the 2016 F-150 gets more than 750 miles between fill ups when using a full tank of gasoline and a full tank of CNG, depending on tank size.

Ford says 2016 F-150s running on CNG or propane will be able to tow the same amount as gasoline-fueled models. Payload capability is the same as well—minus the weight of the installed CNG or propane system.

Since 2009, Ford has sold more than 60,000 CNG/propane capable vehicles and offers the option on its Super Duty and vocational truck lineups as well as on its Transit and Transit Connect vans.

Ford expects the 2016 model to sell better than its first CNG/propane-capable half-ton, the 2014 F-15p, due to the switch from a V6 to a V8 engine and the newer model’s aluminum body.
