FHWA releases $232 million for emergency road and bridge repairs

Twenty-six states and Puerto Rico are set to receive $232 million in Emergency Relief funds from the Federal Highway Administration for road and bridge repairs for weather and “unexpected events” damage, the Department of Transportation has announced.

The Emergency Relief program funds are reimbursed to states to help pay for work on bridges and highways, including creating detours and replacing safety devices, that are damaged by natural disasters and emergency situations.

This round of funding covers events as far back as 2007 and as recently as September 2014.

U.S Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the department is committed to restoring transportation facilities as quickly as possible.

“These funds will certainly repair roads and bridges,” he said, “but most importantly they are helping people who rely on them every day to arrive at their jobs and pick up their children at school.”
