Federal Highway (FHWA) Administrator Victor Mendez told attendees at the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on September 9 to “dream big and build big to create a system that will meet the needs of future generations,” according to a report from our sister site, Aggregates Manager.

At the convention, Mendez pointed to two programs that have helped fund road developments: Transportation Infrastructure Financial Innovation Act (TIFIA) loans and Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants.

In fact, USDOT awarded $474 million in TIGER grants earlier this month.

Mendez noted that the TIGER grants allow for construction of multi-modal projects.

“[It] goes to show that when people get innovative and creative, things can happen,” Mendez said.

Mendez challenged attendees to continue to create new innovations and share ideas.

“We can’t do this alone. There isn’t one person, one entity alone that can move this forward,” Mendez said. “Continue to think about new ways to do things better, faster, and smarter.”
