An excavator operator was killed on a jobsite near Houston last week when his machine sunk in a retention pond.

According to a report from KTRK TV, the unidentified worker was operating the excavator when mud beneath the machine gave way, causing it to become submerged in 12 feet of water.

As you can see in the still from KTRK footage above, only the arm and a small amount of the machine’s cab was still visible above water.

Another report from KPRC TV says co-workers attempted to dig a trench to release some of the water from around the machine. However, the operator’s body was missing from the submerged excavator. He was found dead in the pond later that day.

KPRC reports the man was 58 years old and was employed by Ceres Environmental Services, Inc.
