Gradall intros Discovery Series excavators designed for emergency cleanup

Gradall says it has come up with a low-cost solution for local and state governments facing emergency cleanup, such as occurred with last year’s string of devastating hurricanes.

The company’s Discovery Series excavators were used during storm recovery on the Gulf Coast and in the Bahamas and Caribbean, a news release says. They can travel up to 55 mph on the road and can reduce the need for additional equipment.

Gradall collaborated with Freightliner engineers to integrate an M2 undercarriage with automatic transmission on the new excavators. They also feature a Cummins 6.7-liter engine with 220 gross horsepower and 520 foot-pounds of torque.

Kenworth debuts a fuel cell-powered T680

Earlier this month, Kenworth made headlines by exhibiting for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and bringing along its zero-emission, hydrogen fuel cell T680.

The high tech day cab, which was part of the PACCAR Innovations booth, gave thousands of visitors a chance to not only see the latest in hydrogen fuel cell tech, but also to learn more about Kenworth’s trial runs in the Seattle area and its plans for real-world testing with Total Transportation Services at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The Kenworth T680 day cab’s fuel cell combines compressed hydrogen gas and air to produce electricity with only water vapor emitted at the tailpipe. This electricity can power the dual-rotor electric motor to move the truck up to its top speed of 65 mph, or it can recharge the 100 kHw lithium-ion battery pack for later use.

Atlas Copco debuts Epiroc brand hydraulic attachments at World of Concrete

After initiating U.S. operations on Dec. 1, 2017, Atlas Copco subsidiary Epiroc made its North American debut at the World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Epiroc, which develops and produces drill rigs, rock excavation and construction equipment, is based in Sweden and was spun off from Atlas Copco as part of the company’s recent restructuring.

At World of Concrete, Epiroc is showcasing its range hydraulic attachments including Hydraulic Breakers, Combi Cutters, Concrete Busters, Pulverizers, Multi Grapples, Compactors, Bucket Crushers, Hydro Magnets, Steel Cutters, and Drum Cutters.

Liebherr debuts 50 M5 XXT concrete pump truck, a rugged, electronically simplified machine designed to last decades

At the World of Concrete Tuesday Liebherr showed for the first time its new 50-meter truck-mounted concrete pump, the 50 M5 XXT. The pump truck’s five section boom reaches to 161 feet vertically and 146 feet horizontally.

For moving the material, the M5 XXT offers four pump unit options with outputs from 138 to 167 square meters per hour. The four pivoting outriggers are secured directly to the distributor boom pedal which directs the weight from the boom directly into the outriggers with no flexing of the body of the truck. Liebherr kept the weight down and increased stability with a newly designed boom pedestal. The slewing ring and drive are proprietary Liebherr components.

The front and rear outriggers on the M5 XXT pivot on the same point. “This gives you a ton of flexibility as you set up,” says Liebherr’s Clinton Nichols. “Setting up on tight jobsites is very easy to do. You gain more than 180 degrees working range on the boom,” he says.

Chevy’s 2019 Silverado gets new 3L Duramax diesel, larger wheelbase, more cargo volume

After unveiling its redesigned 2019 Silverado with a surprise aerial delivery last month, Chevrolet used the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to provide more details on its latest flagship pickup, including confirmation for the truck’s long-rumored diesel option.

Chevy says an all-new 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six turbo diesel will be available on the 2019 Silverado alongside 5.3L and 6.2L gas V8 engines. Chevy provided no further details on the new Duramax but says the new V8 engines will feature a fuel-saving feature called Dynamic Fuel Management. Chevy says DFM “actively shuts off any number of cylinders, in a variety of combinations, depending on immediate needs to optimize fuel economy.”

The 3L diesel and 6.2L V8 will be paired with a new Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission along with start/stop technology.
