Congressional leaders announced Thursday that Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) has been elected ranking member of the Highways and Transit Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, according to a report from The Washington Post.

Norton previously served as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management.

Her new ranking member position will involve her with national surface transportation policy, highway and transit facility construction and improvement, safety and research programs and regulation of commercial vehicle operations.

“As ranking member of the Highways and Transit subcommittee, I feel a special responsibility to my colleagues, particularly on the committee, because the surface transportation bill, due this Congress, is vital to every district and every state in the nation,” Norton said of her new role.
