Deck collapse kills 1 construction worker, injures another in Boston

One construction worker was killed and one more was injured Tuesday morning when a third story deck the men were installing in a neighborhood of Boston collapsed.

The workers were installing a multi-story deck to a residence in Jamaica Plain when the top deck collapsed, according to a report from the Boston Globe.

One man landed on the second story porch while the other fell 30 feet to the ground below and later died. The worker who landed on the porch was being treated for critical injuries.

The accident is being investigated by the Occupational Health and Safety Association, but the Globe reports city that an initial review by city inspectors found that the project was being done under an incorrect permit and that the work on the decks began before the city issued the permit in the first place.

The workers were completely rebuilding the porches while the permit being issued only covered “replacing worn-out decking,” the Globe reports.

City building inspectors haven’t decided if they will issue violations yet.
