This Contractor Went from Mowing Lawns to a Multi-Million-Dollar Crushing Business

Darian Houssain, owner of Pro Lawn Care & Landscaping in Richmond, Indiana, is one of Equipment World’s 12 finalists for the 2022 Contractor of the Year award.

And his love for equipment started with a push mower.

Darian began cutting grass with his father, a Guyanese immigrant, in elementary school. The side hustle, Pro Lawn Care & Landscaping, was born out of necessity. “We grew up dirt poor,” said Houssain.

In this video, he discusses just how far the company has come since its humble lawn mowing days. Today, the company has revenues from $3 million to $5 million and employs nearly 20 people. Contract crushing makes up about 75% of Houssain’s business, with the remainder coming from site development and concrete work.

As a trusted, MSHA-certified contractor, his customers across the tri-state area rely on him to save the day when they can’t meet demand at their quarries.

Says one client: “Though he is always busy, he does what he says and gets things done in a safe, reliable manner. He has made his company a well-respected part of our area.”

The Equipment World Contractor of the Year program, now in its 22nd year, has been sponsored by Caterpillar since its inception. It recognizes contractors who display the highest standards of business acumen, equipment management expertise, attention to safety and community involvement.
