Contractor digs 40-foot-long hole in the middle of a road with a backhoe, then just leaves it there

You operate construction equipment long enough, you’re going to get a machine stuck. Sometimes the thought of throwing  your hands up and just walking away, is pretty tempting. And in a bizarre case in New York state recently, a guy did just that.

According to a report from the Associated Press, in Prattsburg arrested Kyle Calabria, 38, after finding his backhoe at the bottom of a 40-foot-long and 12-foot-deep hole in the middle of a rural road.

Calabria had been hired to do some excavation work on a property along the road, but apparently got a bit distracted.

For a reason either unknown or unintelligible, Calabria dug the whole in the middle of the night. When the machine got stuck, he simply bailed and didn’t tell anyone about it.

Thankfully no one driving along the road came upon the crater. Calabria was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. The AP reports he was freed on bond.
