U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration has released a competency model for the commercial and industrial construction industry.
The new model is now the eighteenth available from the Competency Model Clearinghouse, and can be accessed through the department’s CareerOneStop Website at http://www.careeronestop.org/competencymodel/default.aspx.
Industry models are tools that help prepare and inform workers about the latest job requirements needed for success in the workplace.
“We are thrilled to be releasing this new competency model that will serve as a useful resource to help workers in the construction industry prepare for higher paying jobs,” said Jane Oates, assistant secretary for employment and training. “Through input from industry leaders and employers, we know that this latest tool will help workers become more competitive in the workforce.”
Designed to evolve along with changing skill requirements, the model reflects the latest industry skill needs related to sustainability and green building practices. The model will help better educate workers for jobs with companies that are following green building practices.
The model was developed by researching and analyzing publicly available resources, existing skill standards, competency-based curricula and certifications. The content was validated by representatives from industry associations, organized labor, educational institutions and employers to ensure that it clearly defines the knowledge and skills needed for today’s construction worker. The Associated General Contractors of America (ACG) led the validation process.
ETA has now completed three construction industry-sector models demonstrating opportunities to use transferable skills to move through related career pathways.
