The Colorado Department of Transportation has a long history of improving roads, but it will soon be in the business of improving homes.

The department has set aside $2.3 million to provide interior storm windows and window-mounted air conditioning units to help mitigate dust and noise during the Central 70 Project, which will reconstruct a 10-mile section of Interstate 70 east of downtown Denver. The project will be the largest in the CoDOT’s history.

The city of Denver is also considering chipping in an additional $1.3 million for home improvements for residents who live near the highway’s construction path.

The CoDOT told Denver7 News that it hoped to have the home improvements completed by spring, when the I-70 project is scheduled to begin.

The section of I-70 to be reconstructed handles more than 200,000 vehicles a day. The project will also include an express lane in each direction. Kiewit Meridiam Partners won the contract to design and build the $1.2 billion project.
