A bridge worker had to be rescued after he fell into a caisson, a concrete support structure, on the new Champlain Bridge in Montreal, CTV News Montreal reports. The Montreal fire department’s Spider-Man unit responded to the call for help on Thursday afternoon, January 18.

A spokesperson for the Signature on the Saint-Lawrence Consortium said the worker, who was a bridge inspector, lost his footing and fell from a ladder, injuring his right foot. Rescue workers used one of the cranes on site to lower a cable down to the worker to help extricate him from the caisson and pull him from the structure.

The inspector and the rescue team were then airlifted to safety. He was transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The Canadian work safety board, CNESST, the Committee on Standards, Equity, Health and Safety, was informed of the incident.
