North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) officials are planning to develop a design-build contract for part of the Fayetteville Outer Loop a year ahead of schedule in an effort to complete the overall project ahead of schedule.

The department plans to award the contract in late 2017. By combining components into one contract, the design-build contract helps cut construction time and project cost inflation, NCDOT says, and helps the contractor “make innovations that save taxpayers money, lessens environmental impacts and lessens driving delays for motorists.”

Last week a section of the loop opened between Bragg Boulevard and the All-American Freeway, and in August a section opened between Bragg Boulevard and Ramsey Street.

NCDOT expects the entire project to be completed by 2025 with the goal of improving traffic flow on local roads and providing interstate connectivity for the area. “That in turn will encourage economic development, enhance freight movement and strengthen military connections involving Fort Bragg,” the department says.
