Kansas DOT may see budget cuts despite state borrowing program

Kansas welcome signThe Kansas State Finance Council, along with Gov. Sam Brownback have authorized $900 million in borrowing to help shore up state funding, a move following statements that several agencies, including the department of transportation, would suffer cuts to due budget shortfalls, according to a report by the Kansas City Star.

This isn’t the first time the state has enacted this type of borrowing, labeled as a certificate of indebtedness, but it is the highest amount the state has borrowed through the program.

The Kansas DOT could have as much as $16 million cut from its budget for the next fiscal year. Such a cut could dampen future work, as projects recently approved from the agency’s May letting totaled 39.44 million. These include:

District One β€” Northeast
