The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is preparing to begin its annual Faces of Transportation photo contest. But this year, AASHTO is expanding the competition beyond just photography by allowing video entries.

Themed “Transportation in America,” the contest urges “State DOT employees and private citizens to send in photographs and videos of people, projects, and personal experiences that demonstrate the benefits of transportation,” according to the competition’s website.

This year, AASHTO is offering seven awards: five in photography and two in video.

Photographs will be judges in three categories: Quality of Life/Community Development, Historic Projects, and Taking the Road Less Traveled. Photography contestants have the opportunity to win a $125 cash prize (for best photograph) and a $500 cash prize (awarded to winners of the People’s Choice and Best Overall Photograph).

Videos will be judges on two levels, each with their own category. Amateur or novice videos will enter the Safe, Smart and Fun category, while professionally produced videos will be judged in the Innovation in Motion category. Video entries have the chance to earn $150 cash prizes; a cash prize will be awarded to the winner of each category. Winners may be featured on AASHTO’s Transportation TV or YouTube channel.

The contest is not yet open. The deadline to enter is July 31. Judging will take place August 8-31.
