However, the Bennett’s Mill Covered Bridge Historical Society is doing everything it can to preserve the bridge the group is named for in Greenup, Ky.
According to a report in The Daily Independent, the society hosted its annual Dinner on the Bridge on June 11 to raise money to help maintain the bridge and to promote awareness and appreciation of all covered bridges in the region. Those who attended the dinner were treated to wine-tasting, dinner and live music from local talent.
“I am glad to see so many people turn out this year, in spite of the heat,” Frances Roberts told the news agency. She also said she wasn’t really surprised by the turnout, because people love the bridge and enjoy spending time with family and friends there.
Bridges such as Bennett’s Mill, which spans Tygart’s Creek off of KY 7 in Greenup County, weren’t built by state road crews, but by individuals or families to improve their own travel and business. Bennett’s Mill Bridge was built by B.F. Bennett and his brother, Pramley, in 1855 or 1856 to make it easier for customers to access their mill.
