ARTBA Foundation announces winners of safety awareness awards

Public and private transportation groups from across the country were recognized for their commitment to safety at the American Road and Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation seventh annual “Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness Awards” competition. The awards were presented Oct. 10 during the ARTBA National Convention.

The program recognizes outstanding efforts to help reduce roadway work zone construction accidents, injuries and fatalities. The awards are divided into four categories: private outreach campaigns, government outreach campaigns, safety training and innovations in technology.

In the Private Outreach category, the Tennessee Transportation Development Foundation was awarded first place for its program “Ollie Otter’s Work Zone and Seatbelt/Booster Seat Awareness Campaign.” Second place in this category was awarded to the Louisiana TIMED Managers for its “TIMED 2 Drive Safe” campaign.

In the Government Outreach category, first place went to the Missouri Department of Transportation for its “2007 Work Zone Awareness Campaign.” Second place was a tie between the “Work Zone Safety High Visibility Enforcement Campaign” from the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the “Get in the Zone” campaign from the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

In the Local or Municipal Training category, Callahan Industries won first place for its “Safety Alert Program.” Second place went to the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works in Maryland for its “Work Zone Safety Awareness Week 2007.”

In the State, Provincial or Regional Training Category, the New Jersey Work Zone Safety Partnership and New Jersey LTAP were awarded first place for the “New Jersey Traffic Control Coordinator Program.”

The Innovations in Technology category includes two separate awards for methodology and product. The methodology award went to Cianbro/Reed & Reed for the “Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory.” SignCAD Systems won the product award for “Cone Zone.”
